Forced “Vol-cation” in Austria, Moving my Every Worldly Possession, Packing, Unpacking, & More Packing... BAGGAGE, BAGGAGE, BAGGAGE!

Dear PZ Gazzetta Readers:

As I prepare for the world premiere of my new multi-media performance work, Baggage Allowance, I have been faced with an overabundance of real-life inspiration for the piece, with one bizarrely apropos occurrence after another during the two months immediately preceding the upcoming San Francisco premiere at Theater Artaud. Although frequent travel is not out-of-the-ordinary for me, these weeks have been unusually laden with scheduled trips including a performance in Berlin’s Internationales Musickerinnen-Festival, a solo concert at The Stone in New York, a performance at the Krannert Arts Center in Illinois, a panel in New York, a costume-fitting for my part in a Poe film project in New York, a panel in Linz Austria, and a solo concert as part of the Inter-media Festival in Indianapolis.

And, in the midst of all this travel, due to the presence of a certain Icelandic cinder cloud, I found myself consigned to a forced "vol-cation" in Austria. I, along with several of my colleagues, got trapped in Linz for several days after our time there was supposed to be over. As much as I theoretically like the idea of being stuck in Europe, the close proximity to other engagements, and the need to be home working on the new piece made this a bit trying and stressful. Still, as I struggled to make the garments & toiletries in my bag last for the unexpectedly extended stay, I had to be amused by the irony of the connection to my current project.

And, in another Baggage Allowance-related story, a somewhat inconveniently-timed opportunity for a better live/work studio in my building has presented itself, and because I can't really afford to pass it up, I suddenly find myself having to move every possession I own while in the midst of making a piece about baggage! So, welcome again to the world of “Life as Art, and Art as Life!”

In spite of the challenging timing, my recent travels were filled with rich art experiences including performances by Laetitia Sonami, Pauline Oliveros, and Joelle Leandre + Maja Rakje in Berlin, a wonderful concert of Luke Dubois, Todd Reynolds, and Stephan Moore at IPR in NY, plentiful visual art at the Lentos Museum and the OK Center in Linz and the Contemporary Art Museum in Berlin, and a fascinating concert of works for Laptop Orchestra at IUPUI in Indianpolis.

But, finally I am remaining on terra firma in San Francisco and devoting every waking hour to preparing for the upcoming performance premiere of Baggage Allowance. Read on for details...

Happy Travels !

Pamela Z's BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE
Baggage Allowance is a new intermedia work exploring the connections between people and the belongings (and memories) they cart around. A sonically and visually layered installation work and solo performance piece, Baggage Allowance touches upon the ball-and-chain-ness of dragging one’s things all over the world and illuminates the concept of baggage in its many senses– physical, intellectual, and emotional– baggage as impediment and baggage as treasure.

May 20-23, 2010
450 Florida Street San Francisco, CA tel: 415 626 0453
